Hallmarked London 1763
Maker: John Schuppe

Among the many elusive silversmiths working in London during the 18th century, few are more intriguing than John Schuppe, who entered his mark at the London Assay office on 28 June 1753. He was believed to be an immigrant Dutchman, and he specialised in creating jugs in the shape of cows, with a looped tail and a saddle-shaped lid with a finial in the form of a fly. Generations of collectors have been drawn to Schuppe's 'silver cows', one of his cow creamers (1759-60) is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
