September Birthstone
The second hardest precious gem next to diamond, sapphire is a sibling of ruby as part of the corundum family, and can be found in a range of different hues and lightness from the deep dark Australian sapphires, to the 'cornflower blue' Kashmir sapphires. In its rough, uncut form, sapphire appears as a barrel-shaped crystal with a hexagonal cross section, exhibiting 'hexagonal colour zoning' which in turn creates an array of vibrant blue hues present in all natural sapphires.
