Solid Silver Sheep Returns to Yorkshire

We have been delighted to display this solid silver gilt ram in our Harrogate showroom, which we originally crafted in the 1930’s. This splendid ram was back on home soil to help mark our 125th anniversary.

This remarkable piece was a commission carried out by our workshop to be presented to the Worshipful Weavers’ Company, a historic organisation whose origins can be traced back to the early medieval guilds, to celebrate their octocentenary.

The large ram, valued at £60,000, is realistically modelled and stands on an oblong grass plinth supported on an ebonised wooden base. The inscription reads “Presented to the Worshipful Weavers’ Company By the Rt. Hon. Lord Illingworth of Denton JPC on the occasion of their Octocentenary AD 1130 to AD 1930”. The ram was commissioned by Lord Illingworth, a longstanding client of Ogden of Harrogate, came from an old Yorkshire family and served as Postmaster General under David Lloyd George, rising to a peerage in 1921.

Robert Ogden, co-director of Ogden of Harrogate, comments: “This year we are celebrating our 125th anniversary, and were keen to take a look into our history to find some of the more unusual commissions we have carried out.  This commission, for the oldest of all the London livery companies, offers a great example of the ambition and sheer self-confidence that was in the jewellery industry at that time.”
